After suspending visiting earlier in the year, we are now able to offer limited visiting to some wards at the discretion of the nurse in-charge.”

With over 700 dedicated volunteers at the Trust who give up their valuable time to support our patients and staff, Melloney Poole OBE, Chairman, introduced the “Kindness of your Heart” award as a way of saying thank you for their dedication.
Congratulations to Leane Stevenson who was presented with a Kindness of your Heart Award last week by Melloney Poole, Chairman.
These awards recognise the dedication and commitment that our volunteers have given to their role at PHU.
Leane is a true asset to the Trust and has made an immeasurable contribution to the wellbeing and care to patients and their loved ones. Her role as a Family Liaison Volunteer, along with her passion and determination, allowed her to organise a patient’s wedding and made the day very special for the couple.
Carolyn Lowther is a volunteer in the Emergency Department who provides support to patients and staff. Carolyn always shows dedication and commitment, going above and beyond the usual role of a volunteer. Carolyn is also responsible for mentoring new volunteers in the department to ensure that they are supported and become part of the team.
Gerry supports the End of Life Committee at the hospital as a valued patient representative. Gerry provides the hospital with our patient voice and also how it truly feels to have a loved one receiving End of Life care in our hospital. Gerry is also a champion for our new Butterfly Volunteer role who helps to provide non-medical services enhance care in the final days.
With Gerry’s help we have been able to ensure that the improvements we make, and continue to focus on, are what really matter to patients and their families.
Neil began volunteering to give something back to the hospital who looked after him when he was unwell. Neil is a mealtime volunteer who gives up his time each morning to help with handing out breakfast to our patients. Neil also helps mentor new mealtime volunteers and is keen to look at new ways we can encourage and improve nutrition in patients.
There are more than 20 people that volunteer in the Portsmouth Hospitals charity shop, helping the Trust raise vital funds which are put towards enhancing patient experience. The volunteers often help patients and visitors who come into the shop, going above and beyond and always greeting them with a friendly smile.
The Happy To Chat volunteers visit patients on the wards who may feel isolated or lonely in the hospital by befriending them, talking and listening. The team find out information which will support patient discharge and improve discharge experience, as well as encourage the patients social activity by joining them in activities such as board games.
