After signing the Armed Forces Covenant in 2018, Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust (PHU) is proud to be awarded their gold status today, Thursday 30 July.
The Defence Employer Recognition Scheme recognises organisations who pledge, demonstrate and advocate their support for the Defence community. Employers can be awarded bronze, silver or gold in alignment with the Armed Forces Covenant.
The Armed Forces Covenant is a promise from the nation ensuring those who serve, have served and their families are treated fairly and not disadvantaged. PHU is committed to honouring this, and as Veteran Aware the Trust is driven in providing the best care for people who serve and have served in the armed forces and their families.
Former military colleague, Keith Malcolm, was appointed as Armed Forces Covenant Lead Nurse in 2019. Keith recognises the specific support veteran patients and their families require and is an important role to ensure PHU is upholding its promise to the Armed Forces Covenant. He says: “We strive to be an exemplar of the best care for serving personnel, veterans and the military community, which include spouses, civil partners and dependent children of those who currently are or have served.
“It is a great honour to be awarded gold. It represents the highest badge of honour and a great achievement for the Trust, showing our commitment to upholding the values of the Armed Forces Covenant. ”
PHU offers a range of support for veterans and teams are educated and trained to help identify and respond to veterans needs as well as have an understanding of the military culture.
In addition to this, the Trust delivers a highly in demand nurse led mesothelioma clinic purely for veterans, as well as monthly Cake, Companionship and Camaraderie events to bring serving and former members of the armed forces together over cake and coffee.
Lois Howell, Director of Governance and Risk and Executive Lead for Armed Forces Covenant at PHU, adds: “As the biggest recruiter in the area, recognition for our work with the Armed Forces family is important. Being re-accredited adds credibility to our commitment to deliver a gold standard of care and compassion. This award will have a positive effect on staff morale and is a well-deserved acknowledgment of our dedicated, dynamic and resolute support for our military community.”
