Our Leadership Team at PHU is built up of many inspirational women. Hear what Penny Emerit, deputy chief executive, has to say for International Women’s Day.
She said: “Pace, intensity, and learning are some key words that I might use to describe the difference that the pandemic has made to me in my role. I could never have predicted the expectations that have been placed on us or the incredible response that the people in this organisation have been able to deliver but it has served to confirm what I have always believed about the strength of people and relationships on which we rely.
“I’ve been so impressed by our ability to respond to an ever-changing context and the day to day developments in our understanding of how best to respond. Our ability to adapt an annual planning process to a quarterly or even rolling planning process to ensure we use all appropriate capacity to best serve our population is one example of that.
“My biggest challenge over the last year has probably been trying to maintain some balance when the pace and uncertainty of what lies around the corner has been as it has. Keeping a balance between work commitments and family responsibilities, while balancing time for others as well as for me has been tough and I haven’t always got it right.
“Almost overnight, with restrictions on social contact, my direct support network shrunk with friends and extended family unable to support me and my family in the same way so the support from my husband and my work colleagues has been invaluable and I feel very lucky to be able to say that sincerely. Exercise has been the other thing that’s helped! Virtual gym sessions have really helped me to prioritise time for me when work and family commitments threatened to crowd that out.
“I wouldn’t say I have one female role model but there are some key people, particularly through my professional life, who have helped shape my development and supported me. The people who have taken the time to spot talent and support others to succeed are great role models and I hope I can offer that same opportunity to others.”
International Women’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate the contribution and success of women and that’s hugely important to Penny. “Having a support network to enable that contribution or success is critical and for me, I know I have that from my husband and my boys so it’s important to recognise the male allies on International Women’s Day too,” Penny added.
Thank you, Penny! #IWD2021
